What this tells you, and what it does not
Available means the registry says the name can be registered right now. Taken means the registry says it is already registered. Check failed means we asked and got no answer — those are three different facts, and this page keeps them apart, because a timeout dressed up as "taken" is how people give up on names that were free.
The nameserver lookup reads public DNS. It tells you where a domain is being answered from, which is the thing worth writing down before moving a domain so you can set the same ones here and keep the site up.
It does not tell you who owns a domain. Nobody's tool does anymore: registrant details are redacted at the registry under the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
Questions
- Is this a WHOIS lookup?
- No, and we are not going to call it one. Since June 2025 the registry redacts registrant details under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, and the registry’s own detailed record requires the domain’s authorisation code, which only its owner has. So this shows the two facts that are genuinely public: whether the name can be registered, and which nameservers answer for it.
- What does "check failed" mean?
- That we asked the registry and did not get an answer — a timeout or an error. It does not mean the name is taken. Try again in a moment; a name that shows "check failed" is often free.
- Which extensions can I check?
- The .ng family. Type a bare name and we check it across .ng, .com.ng, .org.ng, .net.ng and .i.ng at once; type a full domain and we check that one.
- Does checking reserve the name?
- No. A check is a question, not a hold. Names are registered in the order the registry receives them, so if a name matters, register it rather than checking it twice.
- Why can I see nameservers but not the owner?
- Nameservers are published in DNS because the internet needs them to route to the domain. Registrant contact details are not, and are redacted at the registry.
